China and Japan are close neighbors separated only by a strip of water andthere are many similarities in their culture. From ancient times on, culture ofChinese mainland came down to Japan through different communicationchannels, and it reaped its own fruits since the new culture and Japanese localculture combined to a new cultural pattern. Religion had played a positive roleduring this process. Zen Buddhism from China had a pernicious influence on theJapanese culture, community life and acquirement of national psychology. Up tonow, this effect is still apparent. Meanwhile, Zen Buddhism from local Chinaalso had played an essential role in the integration of Confucianism, Daoism andBuddhism. Buddhism from India and Chinese traditional ideology integratedgradually and they formed an important part of Chinese traditional ideology.By comparing the impact of Zen Buddhism to Chinese and Japanese culture,not only can we have a better understanding of the essence of the two countries’traditional culture, but also can make us know the differences of culture betweenthe two countries as well as the inner reasons for these differences. Theoccurrence and transmutation of a cultural phenomenon is an extremely long anddelicate process. In the process, we can see the change of human society and thehard-won existence of civilization. Religion weakens the human nature andoverstates the divinity. As a kind of Buddhist schools which attaches greatimportance to the heart, Zen Buddhism seems to get rid of certain ofimprisonment and considers that the truth of Buddhism is in the heart, and the so-called big wisdom relies on men’s comprehension instead of a series of ritualswhich reduce human nature. Such ideology makes Zen Buddhism become a kindof human belief, so it is not difficult to understand why Zen Buddhism has agreat contribution to culture. The ideology that the heart is the largest in theuniverse is a kind of Idealism thought, but during the specific historical period, ithad incomparable advancement.
