E E Cummings is an important pioneer of modernist poet in the20thcentury, and he is believed to be the most innovative poet among all contemporarypoets. Cummings is considered to be the spokesman for the English poetry of the20thcentury. Through the experiment on poetical language, Cummings broadens theunderlying significance of poetry and enhances the visual effect of his poems,establishing him as a very unique modern experimental poet of20th century.After a careful research, the author finds that Cummings poem belongs to aspecial kind of concrete poem with visual beauty, which has an important influence onthe successors in the composing styles. Cummings carries out innovations on poeticallanguage and his poems have achieved amazing picturesque effect by means ofstrange arrangement of poem lines. Chinese poems can take advantage of the inherentfeature of Chinese characters to compose the pictographic poems. Cummingsachieves such a picturesque effect in his poems in another way. And his poems are ofmusical tone with beautiful rhyme scheme. By virtue of the Liushu theory, the authorfirstly analyzes the pictographic and phonographic characteristics of Cummings’concrete poems. In Cummings’ hands, English concrete poems have achieved such aneffect of conveying meanings beyond the alphabetic letters through the strange formof poems. The unique poetical language adopted by Cummings has presented thereaders an audio-visual feast.In the transition period of western aesthetic modernity, Cummings’ poemssymbolize his rebellious spirit against the old traditional aesthetic values, embodiesthe requirements of aesthetic modernity; what’s more, Cummings’ poetry revealsitself a unique cognitive and humanistic value in its relentless criticism on therepression and distortion of humanity affected by instrumental civilization. All in all,Cummings establishes himself as one of the most important modern poets. He willlong be remembered as a great poet with genius-like inspirations. And all thetheoretical innovation and skills are precious heritage for the late-comers.
