| With the economic globalization going further, English has become one of the majorlingua francas for international communication, and meanwhile its varieties have come out.Some differences between Standard English and its varieties can be found in pronunciation,vocabulary and grammar, which often leads to difficulty in interpreters’ listeningcomprehension. So the interpreting learners should know about the background informationand the features of English varieties. Besides, they need to learn some practical strategieswhen preparing an interpreting to ensure their output.Charles Carpenter Fries (1887-1967), one of the founders of the American StructuralLinguistics, regards the language activity as a communicative behavior and a tool of meaningdelivery, analyzes the process of the meaning delivery by categorizing meanings, andemphasizes the importance of context in the process of meaning delivery. His thoughts alsodescribe the process and the basic principles of interpreting, therefore, the author of thisdissertation studies the interpreting of English varieties from the perspective of the linguisticthoughts of Fries by taking the Philippines English as an example.In this dissertation, the author analyses the recordings collected in the Philippines andsummarizes the characteristics of the Philippines English in pronunciation, vocabulary andgrammar. Then, from the perspective of the linguistic thoughts of Fries, the author discusseshow to tackle with the difficulties of understanding and interpreting caused by thecharacteristics of the Philippines English. Finally the author wants to prove that the linguisticthoughts of Fries may play a positive role in the interpreting of English varieties. |
