In Chinese, we often see a phenomenon that a single sentence can be interpreted into two meanings. For example, the very same sentence can be understood as “Zhang San lent a book to Li Si” and “ZhangSan borrowed a book from Li Si” at the same time. Similarly,“Zhang San rented a house from Li Si” and“Zhang San leased a house to Li Si” can be exactly the same in Chinese. The different meanings of thiskind of sentences is caused by the ambiguity of the the verbs’ giving-accepting relation. To eliminate thestructural ambiguity, there is a variety of researches in the academia. In the intermediary corpus of foreignstudents, the author also found the ambiguous structure like this which can mean “he also lent me100dollars” and he also borrowed100dollars from me”. However, researches on the teaching of this kind ofstructure to foreign students by domestic scholars are relatively few, which has a negative effect on thelearning of ambiguous giving-acquiring ditransitive construction of foreign students. Therefore this thesistakes the typical ambiguous giving-acquiring ditransitive verb “借” as an example, through analyzingthe intermediary corpus and HSK dynamic composition corpus of foreign students, attempting to find thepriorities and problems in mastering and applying this structure, in order to explore more effective teachingstrategies. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction part, and mainly expounds the reason and significance of selectingthe topic, the approaches, methods and sources of utterance materials of this research. The second chapter mainly elaborates the research status of the ambiguous giving-acquiringditransitive construction, from two aspects, the domestic research summary, as well as the differentunderstandings of the construction between native Chinese speakers and native English speakers. The third chapter mainly analyzes the application of the ambiguous giving-acquiring ditransitiveconstruction by foreign students, summarizing four kinds of ways to eliminate the ambiguity from theacquiring aspect, and three from the giving aspect. The fourth chapter mainly discusses some errors and their causes in using the syntactic structure of theambiguous giving-acquiring ditransitive construction. The fifth chapter puts forward some suggestions on the teaching of the ambiguous giving-acquiringditransitive construction.
