| Combined with the psychological models of self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation,self-actualization, and the self improvement motivation, the self-expansion modelposits that individuals are motivated to broaden their sense of self by acquiring newidentities, developing new perspectives, enhancing capabilities, and gaining resources.By forming relationships and including the other in the self, the individual experienceself-expansion in terms of perspectives, knowledge, identity, ability, relations.Thisstudy aims to explore the construction of college students’ self-expansion and developa College Students’ Self-expansion Questionnaire.Based on former studies, open-ended questionnaire and semi-structuredinterviews, we asked for suggestions form experts and constructed a four factorsmodels of college students’ self-expansion and developed a preliminary questionnaire.With the Exploratory Factor Analysis of203students, we formed the formalquestionnaire and examined the reliability and validity of the questionnaire andfurther investigated the current situation of college students’ self-expansion. Thepresent study investigated whether an individual’s need fulfillment andself-expansion within a romantic relationship can predict self-reported lovewell-being. Preliminary results of this study show:(1) The college students’ self-expansion content four factors: self-efficacy,relational expansion, knowledge experience, perspectives.(2) The questionnaire based on the theoretical model proved to be having goodreliatility and validity and could be used to measure the college students’self-expansion.(3) The characteristics of college students’ self-expansion be summarized as:there are signifinant differences on the gender,the rural-urban origin and thediscipline.Male students’ scores were higher than female students’. The rural students’scores were higher than the cities students’ in the perspectives dimension. The artsstudents scores were higher than the science students’ in the relational expansiondimension.(4) In conclusion, both sets of predictors (need fulfillment and self-expansion)significantly contributed to the variance in love well-being. The present findingsindicated that, when a relationship is able to fulfill needs or provide ample self-expansion for an individual, his or her happiness increase.It has positive impacton the relationship maintenance and the improvement of relationship quality. |
