The report is based on the author’s translation practice of three short stories,namely STICKS, AL ROOSTEN and MY CHIVALRIC FIASCO in Tenth of December,a new collection of short stories written by George Saunders, a famous Americanwriter in the21stcentury. Aiming to introduce excellent foreign literatures and helpexcite readers’ imagination, the author translates the original text first and thenfinishes the report. The report is a general study of the three short stories adapted fromTenth of December based on the theoretic ideas of Hu Gengshen’s An Approach toTranslation as Adaptation and Selection and the translation principles of selectiveadaptation and adaptive selection. The report records the whole translation processincluding preparation of the translation, translation practice and operation of qualitycontrol, and analyzes some cases and difficulties in translations concerning titletranslation, unfamiliar vocabulary, difficult sentences and cultural defaults. Guided byrelated theoretic ideas, the solutions to the above difficulties are discussed. Besides,the report summarizes the author’s feedback about translation experiences and givessuggestions for further improvement of the translation. |
