Zhang Ling is a vital writer in North America Chinese language literary circles whosefiction are drawn on history relating immigrants’ stories on historical context. She uses herunique perspective of feminization to focus on the historical details which are obstructed bythe events with tremendous momentum. Her works are so diversified on descriptions andstaggered in space and time on structure that it digs into content-rich micro-history hiddenbeyond the great history and builds a tiny one made up by clear common individuals. Thisthesis analyzes the historical narrative and its characters in Zhang Ling’s fiction from closereading. And in comparing with other writers in the contemporary and overseas Chineseliterary world it would summary Zhang Ling’s unique conception of history to explore itsreason attempting to grasp her creations in a higher level.The thesis has three chapters. The first chapter talks about the content of the historicalnarrative in her novel. She discusses the immigration lives and spiritual world of the twodifferent immigrants’ generations and builds a positive and comprehensive history of the GoldMountain Blues which was full of blood and tears by completing the creations like the seriesof Gold Mountain Blues, Sister From Shanghai, Beyond The Ocean, Mail Order Bride, Yan’sJourney Home. The second chapter analyzed the strategic of the historical narrative in ZhangLing’s fiction. She started from immigrants’ individual lives and focuses on the details hiddenbehind the grand history in order to return the covered events and reflect the flexibility ofhistorical narrative. The third chapter extracts Zhang Ling’s special view in history and how itbe born. Put the historical narrative of Zhang Ling and other writers in the contemporary andoverseas Chinese literary world together combining with the writer’s growing background,experience of immigrant and religious belief to inquire into her fiction’ s characters.
