This text is primarily a study of Jiangyin chih-ma. Jiangyin chih-ma is the folk symbolwhich has a long history. Jiangyin paper gods are simply thin pieces of paper on which theimaginations of the god from carved wooden blocks. Jiangyin chih-ma is still being used sofar which reflects its practical value and research value. As folk art, it reflects the style andspirit of ethnic folk life. The basic feature of Jiangyin chih-ma is tradition-and-inheritance,blend and symbolic modeling. As a distinctive folk cultural resource is precious in globaleconomic background.This paper traces the origin of the use of "Jiangyin chih-ma" back tothe ancient times when paper gods were burned as sacrifices to the spirits. The paperexpounds the mental space of the Jiangyin chih-ma in terms of its artistic technique. Theywere burned not only as an offering for gods but also as a means of transporting the deityrepresented to heaven. These illustrations and the list of gods alone make this paper a usefulsource on Jiangyin folk religion and folk art.In the Chap.1, I have a clear purpose and meaning for this paper, as well as researchmethods by analyzed the chih-ma’s background and the research status in China and abroad.Then this paper discuss the concept、historical origins、theme classifications and technologicalprocesses of Jiangyin chih-ma in chapter2. The monotheistic origin of Chinese religion is thatthey depended exclusively on the primary religion、the Taoism、the Confucian classics and theBuddhism as their source of reference. This is the first studying folk arts modeling of Jiangyinchih-ma. discussing the historical and folk arts modeling relation between Jiangyin chih-ma、Nanjing chih-ma、 Nantong chih-ma and Wuxi chih-ma, it explored the trace oftradition-and-inheritance, In this both,I analyze the basic feature and classification ofJiangyin chih-ma’s folk arts modeling and probed into its aesthetic consciousness in themicrocosmic view. At last, this paper discuss how to inherit and protect Jiangyin chih-ma.
