It is not easy to find systematic study on Bi Shumin and her novels in varioussorts of literature history books. The absence of Bi Shumin and her novels from themainstream literature history books is a problem worth exploring. The mainstreamliterature history books are expert in elaborating the writers who are good at grandhistorical narrative, while Bi Shumin’s narrative is far away from social problemnarrative and ideological narrative. Therefore, it is logical for Bi Shumin and hernovels to be rarely mentioned in mainstream literature history. Bi Shumin is moreinterested in problems that may appear in the future and she can be seen as a neutralwriter. Seen from this perspective, Bi Shumin’s absence from most literature historybooks is a pity.In fact, there is a special literature world in Bi Shumin’s works. Although thespecial literature world is not perfect, it is noteworthy. From1987to2012, Bi Shumingrows from a beginner with her first work to a veteran writer with her latest novelCorolla Virus. Along with her hard work, the study on Bi Shumin’s works shows apositive trend. The number of research papers increases from little to large. Researchpapers spread on journals try to seriously discover the value as well as the defects ofBi Shumin’s works from different angles, expecting that the writer will develop herstrong points, avoid her weak points and make new achievements once again. Diversestudy papers make up the shortfall of Bi Shumin in mainstream literature history. Onthe same time, the absence from literature history has no effect on Bi Shumin’spopularity among book markets and readers, which inspires some researchers toanalyze Bi Shumin’s works from the perspective of diffusion and acceptance. What’smore, there is also a breakthrough from zero on monographs. Research findings areenriched day by day. However, most studies focus on subject matter, theme, female characters, language style, figures of speech and so on in Bi Shumin’s novels. Theypay less attention to male characters in Bi Shumin’s novels. Like female characters inBi Shumin’s novels, male characters are also important components in Bi Shumin’snovel world. Male characters are distinctive individuals who live out their uniquelives in Bi Shumin’s works. This thesis takes the main male characters in Bi Shumin’snovels as study object, and it attempts to reveal the male characters’ distinctivenessand existence value. The thesis strives to open a scroll of male characters in BiShumin’s novels. The thesis states from three aspects: fiction character theories, male characters inBi Shumin’s novels, and their deep meanings. Male character is the specific researchobject of this thesis, and systematically studying Bi Shumin’s novels from the malecharacter’s point of view is the purpose of the thesis. The first part discusses fictioncharacter theories, which consists of fiction character’s existence, diversity and value. The second part centers on male characters in Bi Shumin’s novels. On the basis ofcharacter traits, this part divides the male characters into four types. The third part concentrates on male characters’ deep meanings. The deepmeanings of the male characters in Bi Shumin’s novels are not limited on aestheticlevel. They can be extended to a broader interpretation space which includes lifephilosophy, ethics, sociology, humanity philosophy and so on. This part summarizesthe deep meanings into the following four aspects: thoughts on life and death, causation of contradictions, gender liberation, balance of gains and losses. Throughthe above discussions, the thesis concludes that male characters in Bi Shumin’s novelshave the necessity to be found and the possibility to be interpreted.
