Abstract/Summary:
By analyzing some translation skills used in Lu Gong Mi Shi, the thesis is to find howintertextuality affects the whole translating process.Lu Gong Mi Shi is a combination with the literary Chinese and long story. This strange formof translation has its specific reason at that time. Analyzing the version with the viewpoint hassignificance. Versions in late Qing dynasty are all the time the hot topic, and critics havedifferent points in these versions. The thesis is composed in the hope of rendering a newdimension to translations in late Qing dynasty. Intertextuality is a new and objective angle tocomment versions. By analyzing Lu Gong Mi Shi, it can be found that intertextual memory oftranslators will consciously or unconsciously affects the translating process. And the intertextualmemory includes translators’ knowledge background, ideology, poetology, to name a few. InChinese version, these things are shown in version with the form of expression or scene of targetliterature. At the same time, it can help to understand the characteristics of Chinese traditionalnovels, and represent the formation process of the version.Close reading is the principle method to do the study. Then labelling and comparing the twotexts are to find some examples. The last step is to classify the examples and find the reasonswhy translators translate them in this way. By analyzing these examples, the author finds:Firstly, translators do not translate something beyond the story, and as for something thattranslators are skilled for and readers were familiar with, they choose to describe elaborately,even adding some extra information. All these are influenced by the knowledge of translators andthe dominant poetology.Secondly, for background information such as descriptions about environment, weather andplaces, translators reserve them and translate them in the way of Chinese traditional novels. Asfor psychological description, translators do not translate them or explain the main idea toreaders. At that time, Chinese literature was undergoing great changes from the plot to charactersand background. Yet, it was not very thorough at that time. The change also influencestranslation; it is very hard for translators to handle psychological description.Thirdly, under the context of intertextuality, the intertextual memory and the source textaffect the translators. Translators dance with handcuffs and shackles, and the whole process isshown in front of readers as a mottled intertextual picture.Writers who point out intertextuality are keen on the literary works in turbulent times. Afterstudying Lu Gong Mi Shi, it is very affirmative to draw a conclusion that versions in late Qingdynasty can be well combined with the intertextuality.
