This project covers some excerpts of the book Adult Development. This is a book written by Susan Krauss Whitbourne who is a famous American psychologist. It was published by Praeger Publisher in the year of1986. This book covers the entire development of adulthood according to processes within several major areas of human functioning:physiology, cognition, personality, family relationships and work. It demonstrates the research approaches and the significance of these approaches to adult development through summarizing numerous and latest research achievements. Recently, adult development is receiving increased attention from psychology, sociology, medicine, and biology. This book can provide people who have had some background knowledge of psychology or sociology of human development with an up-to-date and integrated view of the field of adult development. Furthermore, adult development is related to every human being. Knowing the process of adult development can be of value in helping adults with the major and minor changes that take place in themselves and their lives. Therefore, this project is of great importance in the academic and practical sense. And it is tested by the translator that there is no Chinese version of this book in existence. This project includes two parts:one is translation, and the other is critical commentary. In the critical commentary, the translation process is summarized and some problems are listed. Among the problems two major categories are chosen for discuss. They are how to avoid redundancy in translating English into Chinese and how to divide long sentences into shorter ones. In order to solve these problems, some typical examples are listed and studied. And omission and division are adopted. After analyzing the sentence structure and distinguishing the different sense groups in the sentences, these problems finally have been solved. It is hoped that this project can make some contribution to other translators.
