In1930s, the entire western society was affected by the two world wars. Many traditional value concepts, moral standards and regulations started to collapse. The western faith in idealism and humanitarianism had been debilitated by the bloodywars. The whole European society suffered from the unstable, uncertain andunprincipled living conditions. Muriel Spark was a British female fictionist, whoseworks reflected the disorderly postwar society in1950s. She broke through the narrativepattern of traditional fictions, deconstructed the writing technique of traditional fictionswith certain character, plot, theme and speech characteristics. She abandoned thereligious conception of death and created many death plots. Her various writing stylesof the fictions were of great aesthetic significance.Non-linear narrative is the distinguishing feature of Spark’s writings, which impressedthe readers a incoherent and unstable plot and time. However, the seeming disorderlytime and structure were elaborated by Spark intentionally. The nature of life is disruptedand disorderly, but the living goal is to pursuit the order and significance of life. Exceptfor constructing the traditional narrative pattern, Spark’s writings express thecharacteristic of uncertainty in the postmodernism literature, such as the uncertainstructure, contrary story, people’s behavior lacking rational motivation, etc. Theindeterminacy reflects the texts’ characteristics of openness, diversity and relativity.Furthermore, the objective and calm writings demonstrate deep meanings. The colderand more restrained the speech is, the more powerful it is, especially that many deathplots can encourage the reader’s retrospection on life. This paper analyzes the narrative characteristics, indeterminacy, objective writing styleand death plots in Muriel Spark’s writings, explores Spark’s creative feature, interpretsthe writings’ aesthetic significance and their tendency of postmodernism literature.
