"Pioneering" Exploration

As one of significant literature journals in new times, Flower City is close to development of contemporary Chinese literature. Taking Flower City (1979-2009) as research subject, this paper provides analysis of works in this journal in the view of field of literary production consisting of the policy, editor, author and commenter. Reviewing "pioneering factor" of literature works in the middle and late period of1980s, this paper is required to reveal development, prosperity and transformation of Avant-garde Literature and explore how the literature journal insist on its "Pioneering" character in complex social environment and what change the character experiences.This paper develops from the following four aspects:The introduction part provides a general description and analysis of Flower City, making definition of resource and evolution of such core concepts as "Pioneering" and "Avant-garde Literature". At the same time, it gives an overall conclusion and arrangement of research situations of current academic circles.The first chapter focuses on discussion on the influence of social environment, editing and commenter on Avant-garde Literature in the middle and late period of1980s. Flower City gradually establishes the exploring and creative style from the initial style full of Lingnan atmosphere and special area color. In the middle and late period of1980s, Pioneering authors’ works was specially published by such major literature journals as People’s Literature, Harvest and Shanghai Literature in driving momentum. However, Flower City showed no interest in pioneering literature at that time. During the period when Mr.Li Shifei was the chief editor, the reportage had witnessed success as well as setback. Entering into1990s, Flower City began to put its emphasis on the novels and form exploration so Bei Cun, Lv Xin and Su Tong frequent came into the stage of the journal. It is proved that "Pioneering" did not fall into disrepair after1989.The second chapter discusses the reflection and change of "Pioneering" in1990s-Flower City with respect to new-generation author, female author and freelance author. Doubt on terminal value and attention to reality is the multi potential mood of new-generation authors. With unique female experience and rich feeling appeal, Chen Ran, Lin Bai and Hai Nan took a spiritual risk. Advocating sensible awareness and facing absurd of living, Wang Xiaobo writes his expectation of freedom and beauty. At the same time, under the circumstance of recurrence of realism, Flower City continued to promote artistic forma internal and external extension by "New Novel" column.In the third chapter, its Experiment Text and Flower City Starting off Column discussed change of Pioneering under the influence of consumerism from the end of1990s to the new century. This journal still advocates the integration and innovation of literary form to provide the new authors with spacious development space. The new "pioneering factor" still has the pioneering character in general but is different in expression form compared to original one.In conclusion,"Pioneering" is a flow and open concept so all literature of creativeness, rebellion and experimentalism is pioneering. After more than three decades, Flower City still insists on "Pioneering" character to reflect tough development of literature journal and show richness and complexity of pioneering literature.
