The research subject of this dissertation is the construction of noun object following V-O-morpheme-constituting Verbs (V-O+O1), which is regarded as ’non-standard’ in traditional Chinese syntax. Due attention was given to this construction because of its thriving development. However, the deep semantic structure of this construction is still to be explored. So this dissertation is to work on the semantic structure by using Thematic Theory and Semantic Features, and exploiting the research method of Argument Analysis, so as to search the track of its development and conclude which group of verbs and nouns shall be admitted into the construction.Chapter1introduces research background, including the achievement and shortage of present research, research subject, method and theoretical framework of the dissertation. Due emphasis is given to the introduction of Theta-roles and Argument Structure. In Chapter2, O1is discussedseparately. Through borrowing from the classification of O1’s theta-roles on the basis of the specificity of (V-O)+O1, we generalize11theta-roles that can be admitted by O1. By giving the semantic features of the11theta-roles respectively, we initially analyze the reason of place-role overwhelming.Chapter3focuses on the semantic relation between O and O1by means of two-round classification. In the first round of morpheme classification, predicate-morpheme O is proved to have superiority in admitting O1than noun-morpheme. In the second round, coreference of O and O1is taken as a criterion in Argument Analysis. And we conclude that O1preferably take those nouns that have coreference with O.In Chapter4we take the perspective of V-O analysis. By analyzing the semantic relations between V and O, and their influence on the capability of V-O admitting objects, a category of’bidirectional verbs’ was generalized and proved to have stronger attraction to objects. And those (V-O) that can generally not be accepted by (V-O)+O1construction are also discussed.Through sentence transformation, we prove in Chapter5that not all (V-O)+O1are derived from the omission of preposition marks. Moreover, pragmatic factors, particularly, syllable prosody influencing the construction are discussed. Theory of Prosodic Grammar is used in explaining phenomenon generalized from corpus and explaining the huge conduciveness and restrictiveness that pragmatic factors such as prosody play in the development of (V-O)+O1Chapter6is the conclusion of the dissertation. Admittance rules formulating verbs and noun-objects are given on the basis of analysis. The vital importance of Arguments assignments and semantic relations are implicated by the rules.
