There are the Shang and Zhou dynasties in Chinese history, which belongs to "the bronze age" in the archaeology. This period there are a large of bronzes,which havemany variety, different shapes.Among them,when the ancients held great sacrifice, banquet and other social activities, the bronze sacrificial vessel is necessary thing, playingan important role in the social and political life. As a representative of the bronze ritual vessels, the bronze Ding even becomes the symbol of social class and the state power. Starting from the Han Dynasty, the data of bronze tripod have been found. Since Song Dynasty, the bronze tripod which become an important study object of the epigraphy and archaeology, is the concerns of the epigraphy and archaeologists.However,the research on the bronze tripod is mainly concentrated in the round vessel in the past, lessinvolving the ding square tripot. the ding square tripot is usually considered as the ritual which only the high grade noble can use. As for the number of the Ding Square Tripot exactly plays what role and status in the Shang and Zhou society, existing, developing and evolving in what form and shape in the different time and the different area?The article contains a total of204pieces of goods handed down,176pieces of theunearthed and copper ding square tripot On this Basis,this article uses typology dating method and so on to understand the characteristics of the Ding Square Tripot comprehensively,systematically,methodically and clearly in the shape, decoration, etc..Then, thispaper explores the differences and characteristics of the Ding Square Tripot in the age and area. From two aspects of practical and symbolic functions, the paper studies onthe functional status of the Ding Square Tripot in the Shang and Zhou period, especially focus on the use of the Ding Square Tripot in the tombs and burial site. The purpose of these works is to distinguish the different symbolic significance of the Ding SquareTripot in the use of class, identity, gender, ethnicity and others. Finally, it grasps the social historical and cultural connotation of the Ding Square Tripot, understanding the process and culture change of the Ding Square Tripot from origin to development and evolution,until dying out.
