Cultural Freedom And Multicultural Harmony——Rethink Nationalistic Multiculturalism

Nationalistic multiculturalism considers that the nation is the unique subject of culture. Multicultural society should take separate national plate as the unit of multicultural society. But from the theory and practice, there are inevitable contradiction and limitations. Today, the nation state model is the establishment universal. And a nationalism wave which swept through the world is increasingly threatening the political unity and social harmony of many multi-national countries. Therefore, it is necessary to deep analysis, rethink and criticize the nationalistic multiculturalism to build a new multiculturalism which is people-oriented, respect people cultural freedom, individuality and affirmative cultural communication value. It will be better to achieve the harmony and stability of the multicultural society.This paper mainly makes up of four chapters.The first chapters through comparative analysis of nationalistic multiculturalism and liberalistic multiculturalism demonstrate the basic cultural subject is specific individuals. The value of cultural diversity must depend on its production and maintenance. We are promoting multiculturalism should ensure that the people have free to choose cultural rights first.The second chapter illustrates the nationalistic multiculturalism is contradictory and contrary to the fact. Nationalistic multiculturalism claim that national cultural difference is absolute. But its separate cultural standards are relative. It emphasizes culture is diverse. But it is used to practice assimilation of its internal group. It believes that all national cultural characteristics are the old. But some national traditions are it invented. It is always appealing for respecting different ethnic groups of religious freedom. But it never cares about the individual religious freedom in it nationalizes the universal religion operation. It often considers a period of a cultural phenomenon is eternal and pure. But it fear of culture natural diffusion and fusion will destroy its national culture is pure and eternal myth. The third chapter point out nationalistic multiculturalism by resorting to a single cultural identity and established exclusive self-government to solidify cultural differences, is not only ignoring the common link and interactive fusion of cultural objective reality, but also seriously interferes people’s cultural freedom. It is easy to produce cultural "isolation", and induce the antagonism and conflict between cultures.The fourth chapter is using the "meme" concept to analyze the mechanism of culture’s spread, competition and fusion, and explains the nationalistic meme complex’ s replication strategy. Finally it demonstrates the individual has a variety cultural identity which is formed crisscross complex relationship with a variety of cultural groups. That will play an important role for pluralistic society integration.
