Compliment which is the positive evaluation is a kind of frequently used speechact. In human verbal communication, as a kind of frequently used positivecommunication behavior, compliment is the lubricant of communication. The basicstructure of compliments is an adjacency pair structure, that is, compliment speech actand compliment response speech act should be paired. Compliment speech act andcompliment response speech act which have different performance relate to thedifferent national cultural psychology. The acquisition of these Chinese speech act ofMadagascar students is inevitably branded the nation’s culture. Compared with theChinese students, this paper which is based on the the study of Madagascar students,is showing the survey and analysis of the different performance of their complimentspeech act and compliment response speech act. At the same time, comparison of thedifference of the two nations’ cultural psychology is providing some usefulsuggestions to the teachers of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.This study is based on Speech Act Theory with principle of cooperation,principle of politeness and face theory. According to questionnaire in DiscourseCompletion Task, we are collecting and analyzing the corpus and studying on Chinesecompliment of Madagascar students on classification with gender factor, relationshipfactor and social status, and are studying on Chinese compliment response ofMadagascar students on classification with Agreement strategy, Modesty strategy andHarmonious strategy.The statistical results show that, compared with the Chinese students, on Chinesecompliment Madagascar students like using explicit compliment. In gender factor,Madagascar female’s using frequency of Chinese compliment is higher thanMadagascar male’s. In relationship factor and social status, to the closer person and tothe people in different social levels, Madagascar students use more explicitcompliment. On the other hand, on Chinese compliment response Madagascarstudents firstly use Agreement strategy, and secondly use Harmonious strategy, andthirdly use Modesty strategy.
