A Study Of Sun Zhili’s Chinese Version Of Pride And Prejudice From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

This thesis attempts to make research on Sun Zhili s Chinese version of Prideand Prejudice in light of Eugene A. Nida s functional equivalence. As Pride andPrejudice has been influential in the literary field and popular with the Chinesereaders, it is of great significance to study the functional equivalence achieved inSun s translated work.The functional equivalence is the standard of translation raised by Eugene A.Nida. Nida points out that the evaluation of a translated work that is good or not,depends on how largely the response from the readers of the translated work isidentical to that from the readers of the original. Based on Nida s theory, this thesistakes Sun Zhili s Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice for a case study.This study attempts to answer the following two questions.1. In what aspects has the functional equivalence been achieved in Sun Zhili sChinese version of Pride and Prejudice?2. What translation methods adopted by Sun Zhili have made equivalencepossible in Sun s Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice?Through the comparative analysis of Sun Zhili s version with the original text,the study has brought out the following findings.1. The functional equivalence has been achieved in meaning, style and culturein Sun Zhili s Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice.2. Based on the analysis of Sun s Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice, thetranslation methods adopted in Sun s translation have been summarized.It is concluded that Sun s version achieves functional equivalence successfully.By using Nida s theory to analyze the Chinese version of Pride and Prejudice, theauthor of this thesis hopes the study may do a little contribution to theEnglish-Chinese translation research.
