“The Little Match Girl”, a fairy tale written by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen,was introduced into China as vernacular Chinese version during May4th period. Sincethen,for about one hundred years, it was spread widely by various media and became well-known to all over China. In these one hundred years of propagation, the interpretations ofthis tale diversified owing to different focus; and these diverse interpretations reflectedhistorical change of humanistic psychology, additionally, experienced the propagation andintegration into Chinese culture of alien culture and historical experience into the Chineseculture.This paper includes four parts. Firstly, the introduction contains research meaning andmethod of the paper,and reviews predecessors’ related study and conclusion. In the firstchapter, it details and cards the propagation of“The Little Match Girl”into and in China,and the paper is equipped with actual data telling the tale’s widely spread and continuouslyeffect in China.In the second chapter, the paper provides specifics of different interpretations for “TheLittle Match Girl” with various focus in many historical periods, and discovers their focusdifference and characteristics. Roughly, in Republican period, the interpretations intendedto the tale’s imaginative world, vanity, realistic concern, and compassion feelings; in NewChina, before reform and opening up, they focused on the tale’s class contradiction andrealism, but after the reform, paid more attention on its humanitarianism and childlikeinnocent.In the third chapter, the paper inquires deep reasons for these different interpretations,indicates these differences are closely related with the trend of humanitarianism fromwestern countries and Marxist thought’s propagation in China for last one hundred years;and related with the historical choice for China’s social development method madebetween Europe-US road and Socialism way; in addition, it tied tightly to the repeated bouts of the two. The interpretations of “The Little Match Girl” varied in different times,and it is historical change of humanistic psychology for the past century. The paperinquires the historical experience hidden beneath the propagation history of “The LittleMatch Girl”in China;“Western Learning” forced Chinese culture to accept westerninfluence; to modernize Chinese culture, people actively learned western culture, and madeuse of selective interpretation on its content; through various and repeated interpretationand usage, western culture slowly integrated into and built a fresh new content of Chineseculture.
