Toni Morrison is a famous contemporary African-Americans writer, literary critic,Random House publishing company editor and senior editor, and Princeton Universityhumanities professor. As a representative of black culture, Morrison combinesdifferent voices to organize and build different characters, rather than rigidly force herown point of views to readers. The purpose is to make the reader really become amember of novel’s character in the reading process to taste the joy and sufferings ofthe hero’s life and their inner worlds. Blacks’ suffering mainly from the self and itsown traditional cultural cleavage and the mainstream culture of white worldpermeates and subverts blacks’ culture, and Morrison’s novel aims at repairing blackculture and representing the lack of self-consciousness in cultural transmissionfracture. In Morrison’s view, away from the black community is more farther moredangerous. The past of blacks is a tie that can not be severed, the essence of treasureof black culture is their past, and only return to the past, we can find the sustenance ofblacks’ soul. Here the “past”, in Morrison ’s view, it includes both the Old South andAfrica. The old South as like Africa is the blacks’ tradition. Morrison’s characters inthe novel sometimes were regarded too tired in the fight for freedom road, sometimesmistakenly thought that they have gained their freedom, and sometimes they wereassimilated by survival predicament of white culture. Based on the times andhistorical significance of the novel’s contents and themes. Morrison’s unique narrativede-familiarization approach gets more attention recently.The exploration of Morrison’s works in domestic mostly confines to the theme,symbolic meaning, artistic, etc. The exploration of de-familiarization theory is alsolimited to her several works, such as “Beloved”,“Love”. The de-familiarizationtheory in“Beloved” has an initial study, but in “Love”, scholars have not yet made anyresearch. This thesis aims to analyze the de-familiarization theory of “Love”, and tofind the common views of de familiarization perspective in Morrison’s works. Thethesis aims to explore how Morrison using the de-familiarization theory to highlighther individual ideas and social views. The other innovation of this thesis is that it notonly explores the de-familiarization theory’s application in literature, but also other subjects such as anthropology, sociology, translation studies. Morrison expects toexplore the de-familiarization theory of “Love” to find out the innovation ofde-familiarization perspective and the impact of this innovation on theme as well asideas, and other Morrison aims to explore the de-familiarization theory’s innovationand the effects to theme views.The thesis consists of the following parts: introduction, body and conclusion.The first part expounds the current research of Morrison and the research statusand significance of the “Love”and de-familiarization theory.The second part expounds: The first chapter expounds the definition anddevelopment of de-familiarization theory and its influence and significance toMorrison’s works, but also expounds the de-familiarization’s application in otherdisciplines interdisciplinary. The second chapter, by non-formatted language to reflectthe de familiarization in “Love”, it contains literal metaphors, italics applications anddialogue. The third chapter expounds the loose structures in “Love”, includingconfusion storyline, time and space, this paper aims to form a sense of strangenessand alienation, allowing readers to go through their own way of thinking to integrateand understand the novel. The fourth chapter expounds unconventional narrativeperspective of the “Love”, including multi-perspective narrative, narrative blur andmusical elements, let the people freed from the shackles and narrow of everydayrelationships, to give readers a comprehensive perspective to analyze work. The fifthchapter, expounds the distorted character’s relationship in “Love”, including themother-daughter relationship, sisterhood relationship, grandfather-granddaughterrelationship and distorted marriage. By a unfamiliar relationship of the characters,Morrison call attention to the margins people of African-Americans.The third part expounds that Morrison places "Love" in a new historical contextto research, using the unique de-familiarization perspective to highlight her creationstyles.
