The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is the European best-selling novel in2013, andthe author of this novel is British veteran playwright Rachel Joyce. The Unlikely Pilgrimageof Harold Fry as a work of realism is her first novel published in2012, which has been sold inover thirty countries, and also listed in “The Man Booker Prize2012”. Description is the maincharacteristic of the novel, and makes the whole story full of images. The language of thenovel is natural, moderate, condensed, jumpy, which highlight the different personalities ofthe characters. It uses metaphor, personality, parallelism, alliteration and other rhetoricdevices in shaping those fresh and vivid characters. So far, the novel hasn’t been translatedinto Chinese yet. The trail translation of the novel into Chinese introduces the descriptivenovel to the audience which leads to a better understanding of the artistic concept of thedescriptiveness in the novel.During the process of translation, the author of the report applied the relevant theories intranslation. The examples are shown in the report.This report is composed of three parts: introduction, main body, and conclusion. Maincontents are as follows:The first part is introduction. It mainly introduces the novel, and its language featuresand writing characteristics of the novel.The second part is main body of the report, which is consists of three parts:Chapter Ⅰis the preparation before translation. It analyzes source language from thegrammar and lexical level with systemic functional linguistics cohesion theory. The reportillustrates how to use cohesion theory to make sure the language features of the novel: natural,delicate, and penetrating, and the writing characteristics: description and full of image. Thetranslation should convey the features of the original language. So as to make the translationmore accurate and the theme more profound, and the meaning of the words are exploreddeeply in the concrete context of the novel.Chapter Ⅱ analyzes how to transfer rhetoric to the target language with literal translationmethod and conversion method. In order to achieve the effect that faithfulness, expressivenessand elegance, which contribute to express the characteristics of the figures and the real feelingof the circumstances. Chapter Ⅲ studies the application of the two core concepts of translationtheory--domestication and foreignization. The report further points out that domestication andforeignization are complementarily, mutually reinforcing dialectic. Translator should complythe Chinese traditional culture with domestication translation and conform to the culturaldevelopment while adopting the method of foreignization in translation.The last part is conclusion, in which it mainly summarizes the former part of the reportand describes the experiences during my translation. An in-depth analysis of the original textis necessary, so as to grab the language features of the source language text which is natural,exquisite and vivid. It also analyzes the writing style of detailed description of the novel.
