Based on The Fiction of Eunuch Sanbao’ Voyages to the South East Asia, thisdissertation makes a study of appellation with the method of qualitative and quantitativeanalysis. After exhaustive statistics on appellation words in this book, we could dopreliminary research on the characteristics of appellation system and the culturalconnotation that it reflects. Then, this study could provide reliable reference for theresearch of Chinese appellation.This dissertation consists of four chapters:In chapter one, it introduces the concept and classification of appellation, andbriefly summarizes the history and current status of its research. And it also clarifies thevalue of this dissertation as well as the version of this book.In chapter two, it analyzes the relative appellation of The Fiction of EunuchSanbao’ Voyages to the South East Asia. In the synchronic level, it compares this bookwith some other contemporary novels; in the diachronic level, it compares with theancient Chinese and modern Chinese. Then we could learn that the core kinshipterminology is stable, and the development trend of it is dual tone.In chapter three, it analyzes the social appellation of The Fiction of EunuchSanbao’ Voyages to the South East Asia. It classifies the social appellation of this bookinto three categories: the social communication appellation, the moral characterappellation and the physical character appellation. After giving some examples, it couldhelp us draw the general picture of the social appellation in this book.In chapter four, on the basis of a overall grasp of the appellation of The Fiction ofEunuch Sanbao’ Voyages to the South East Asia, it analyzes the characteristics andcultural connotation of the appellation in this book. And it indicates that influenced bygenre and background, the military-related and religious-related social appellation inthis fiction is abundant. It makes reasonable explanation on the range extension of therelative appellation from view of pragmatics. And it also reflects that hierarchy andetiquette is very important in Ming Dynasty.In the final part, it comes to some conclusions about the appellation in this fiction.
