As an important writer and critic in20century’ American literary circles, MalcolmCowley(1898—1989) fully devoted himself to literary studies all through his life, especially hisinvolvement in the activities of “the Lost Generation”, which caught the attention of academiccircles. The paper conducts research on Cowley’ s early years literary activities and literarycreation to sum up his literature and art ideas in this time and to figure out the development ofhis literary and art ideas. When Cowley was engaged in literary activities, he also paid closeattention to the major social and political events, which fully embodied his due social conscienceby contributing his efforts to solve the social problems. Thus, Cowley’s literature and art ideas ismore sophisticated.This paper is mainly divided into four parts. The first part simply introduces Cowley and hisworks, analyzes the influence of his growth on his works,and summaries the status quo of theresearches on Cowley at home and abroad. The second part presents Cowley’s poetry creationand criticism writings, analyzes his artistic features and artistic pursuits. The third part mainlyanalysis the influence of the exile life of “The lost generation” on Cowley’s literary creation, andthe changes of his literary and art ideas. The author focuses on Cowley’s masterpieces Exile’sReturn, and it manifest the life and ideologies of “The lost generation”. The last part exhibits thechanges of Cowley’s ideology in the1930s, it’s mainly reflected in The Dream of the GoldenMountains. The author takes further elucidate of this book, and in order to figure out thedevelopment of his literary and art ideas.
