A Study Of Narrative Strategy Of Kyung-Suk Shin’s Fiction Please, Look After Mom

Kyung-Suk Shin is a famous author of modern Korean, whose fictions arebeautiful and moving loved by readers. Please, Look after Mom is written in2008, andwith its Chinese version and English version published this fiction impresses lots ofreaders. From previous studies most of studies are about feminism criticism、writer’sconsciousness、content and style. There are no studies about the narrative features ofPlease, Look after Mom so this thesis analyzes the characteristics of narration byapplying the theory of narratology. The whole thesis can be divided into five parts.Excepting the head and the tail, the other three parts are the main body of this paper.Chapter one is the preface to this thesis. In this chapter, I have made anintroduction of Kyung-Suk Shin’s other fictions and Please, Look after Mom, then Iroughly outlined the present researches and the main content and value of the paper. Atlast I sum up the history of narratology.Chapter two is the studies about the variety of narrative situation of Please, Lookafter Mom. In the fiction the author uses the figure narrative situation and the firstperson narrative situation. From a narratology point of view, analyses artistic forms ofthe text based on narrative figure, focus and mode. Specifically, the author usesinternal focalized narration、the mixed-figure narration and the showing narration.Chapter three is the narrative structure of Please, Look after Mom. The authormakes the plot show a "unfamiliarity" aesthetic effect through time-regroup; and at thesame time the author makes the spatiality of the fiction show a juxtaposition effect.In the memory of mother remembered by her daughters and son, the author comparesthe difference between tradition and modernity.Chapter four is the narrative context of Please, Look after Mom. At first I haveanalyzed the text context. Then I have analyzed Kyung-Suk Shin’s unique stylecompared with her other fictions. At last I analyzed time context of this fiction. In justthree decades, Korean have changed from a Confucian society to a modern society, so the author tries to solve the problems of this compressed modernity.The last chapter is the summary of narrative strategy of Please, Look after Mom.Just because there are less studies about Kyung-Suk Shin’s Fiction Please, Look afterMom and it’s narrative strategy, I hope this thesis could enrich the study of Koreanauthor and their works.
