Missionaries in modern China and Chinese literature are inextricably linked. On the onehand, missionaries have translated and written novels in Chinese to China. On the other hand,they have translated and introduced numerous Chinese classical literature works to western.In this two-way process, they founded lots of journals which are their main position to expressthoughts. The Chinese Repository founded by missionaries in China, as one representativeEnglish periodical, first translated Chinese classical novels. At present, scholars pay littleattention to missionaries’ translation of Chinese classical literature works and the relatedstudies focused on the analysis of single translated work which can easily be one-side. Thispaper, centers on Chinese Repository, aims to comb missionaries’ translated Chinese classicalliteratures and comprehensively conclude the objectives, characteristics, significances andsome relative matters of missionaries’ translated activities.This paper divides into four chapters.The first chapter presents the translation of Chinese classical literature by Chinesemissionaries in modern China. It will sort out the translation history of missionaries and thendiscuss their translation situation in modern China mainly from three aspects: protestantmissionaries’ translation,catholic missionaries’ translation and missionaries’ translation inmodern China on inheritance and development of early missionaries in China.The second chapter sorts out China classical literatures which were translated in ChineseRepository. It will briefly introduce Chinese Repository and then comb novels, poetries,dramas and other literary genres translated by missionaries in this newspaper.The third chapter explores the characteristics and objectives of the translation of Chineseclassical literature by missionaries in modern China. It will come to a conclusion which isbased on the comparison and summary between translation of Chinese classical literature inChinese Repository and the other relevant materials.The forth chapter analyzes the significances and shortcomings of the translation ofChinese classical literature by missionaries in modern China. In order to clarify the literaryvalue of missionaries’ translated Chinese classical literature, it will mainly analyze the significances on missionaries’ translation for westerners to know about China and WesternSinology development in the west, at the same time, it will also discuss their shortcomings inits translations.Lastly, attach all translated Chinese classical literatures in Chinese Repository.
