| As the first provincial website for English news on education, Jiangsu Education Website comprehensively publicizes the achievements on educational reform and development, opens up to the world and brings in further development. It reflects an inevitable demand of establishing the province strong in education and leading in achieving educational modernization, as well as the great significance of pushing forward the educational communication and cooperation, the scientific development of education, and strengthening the international competitiveness and influence of Jiangsu education.Deputed by Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education (JPDE), Jiangsu Education Services for International Exchange (JESIE) selected a crew of13staff for the translation of education news, which originates from the official website of JPDE, or is transferred from other mainstream media reporting education events and issues. As one of the translators, the author has undertaken a translation capacity of over30,000Chinese characters into English since its open-up of the website in the end of2011. Their contents mainly cover1) educational conferences,2) officers’inspection and meetings,3) the explanation of educational policies and programs, and4) other outreach documents with literary language.In the process of translating the news, the author encounters a series of difficulties and problems such as the shift between source and target languages, and the pursuit and acquisition of parallel texts. Accordingly, the report aims to analyze the reasons, to find solutions to these problems, and to sum up the general law of translating this type of texts.The author’s experience reveals that accumulation and reference are of great importance for the translation dedicated to some specific areas like education, and a standardized translation is essential to increase the working efficiency, the reputation of specific industries or organizations, and the quality of international publicity. |
