The Import,Application,Transmission Of The Western Coin Minting Technology And Its Function In China

A western Coin Minting technology was introduced in the late Qing Dynasty. With the establishment of mints in various places later, the western Coin Minting technology was widely applied in China. The introduction of the western Coin Minting technology was not occasional and was generated under specific social conditions; its import, application and transmission reverberated greatly in our country, which not only influenced people’s life, but also brought major influences to and effects on economy, finance and currency reform and so forth in China.At present, certain research has been carried out on the import of the western Coin Minting technology from a currency history angle in academic circles. However, systematic research on introduction of the western Coin Minting technology, conditions about establishment of various mints, technological processes of Coin Minting, Coin Minting situations&relevant influences, introduction of Coin Minting knowledge and so forth is absent. In the paper, based on research made by predecessors, histories about import&development of the western Coin Minting technology and transmission of relevant knowledge are investigated. In addition, influences of the western Coin Minting technology on society, life and economy and so forth in the late Qing Dynasty are preliminarily studied and discussed.Main work in the paper is as follow:Firstly, historical evolution of two traditional Coin Minting technologies including the traditional Chinese money-casting technology and the western Coin Minting technology is described.Secondly, evolution, materials&equipment, technological processes, operational conditions and so forth of mints in various places such as the Guangdong Mint and the Financial Department Mint which were built since the late Qing Dynasty are investigated. Reasons, development, influences and effects and so forth of introduction of the western Coin Minting technology are analyzed.Thirdly, with the Zhuqian Gongyi (a Chinese Version book on British coin minting technology translated from English) as a key case for research and in combination with the understanding of relevant contents of periodicals such as the Shen Bao (a newspaper compiled first at April30,1872in Shanghai), translation, dissemination and influences of western Coin Minting technology knowledge are studied and discussed.Fourthly, based on the above research, influences of social changes on the import of the western Coin Minting technology, and influences of the Coin Minting technology on people’s life and economy are analyzed.
