The Ghost Image In Weird Novel Of Wei Jin Northern And Southern Dynasties

"Ghosts" has been very important objects of folk beliefs throughout Chinese traditions and culture. At the meantime, as human imaginations,"ghosts" has been lively represented in various literatures. Ghost characteristic literature as Chinese traditional literature was dramatically developed in Wei, jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties. In this period of time, a big amount of mythical fictions that describe gods, spirits, ghosts, and monsters were created. This research mainly takes the ghost related texts from ghost fictions from Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties as study materials. This research aims to find out the distinguishing perspectives of "ghosts" in the study materials, and to identify its influences to the ghost modeling in ghost literature after Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties.The paper is composed in six parts, which includes defining the ghost characters, the cultural background of ghost fictions, and so forth. In the second part of the paper, the researcher firstly reviewed the development of ghost stories in Qin and Han dynasties then summarized its influences on the developing of ghost stories in the following Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties. The most important part of the research lies in the third part of the paper, which mainly categorized the distinguishing ghosts characters appeared in ghost literature from Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties.The research shows that the ghost fictions written in Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties appear to be advanced in imagination utilizing, story lines and plots designing, ghost characters modeling, and showing the complexities of human-ghost relations. In these stories, ghosts were characterized with different appearances similar to humans’, and most of them with deep human connotations. Among the ghosts, there are passionate beautiful smart ghosts modeled after female humans; there are intelligent eloquent ghosts modeled after male humans; there are also funny dumb ghosts; and sneaky cold evil ghosts. These ghost characters heavily influenced the later ghost classical novels. Especially the characters of female ghosts who are loyal to their beloved ones directly influenced the modelling of ghost characters in Legends Tang, Chinese traditional opera, and novels from Ming and Qing dynasties. The paper has also discussed the above the influences on this research.
