The thesis mainly discusses the anaphora function of ci and the demonstrativeexpressions it composing in modern Chinese. Although it is the representative ofdemonstrative pronoun in ancient Chinese, it still exists in modern Chinese, so itsexistence must be have some motivation. Based on the written Chinese corpus fromthe Peking University, we use the Accessibility Theory of Ariel and TopicalityTheory of Xu Yulong to analysis the accessibility and anaphora resolution of ci andthe demonstrative expressions it composing. Then we find that when usedindependently, ci is an intermediate accessibility markers, if the demonstrativeexpression is made up of ci, the accessibility depends on its syntactic position. Thearticle consists of6chapters:The first chapter is introduction, mainly introduces the significance, background, theory and method of the article. The second chapter mainly investigates the syntactic function and the nature ofantecedent of ci..In the third chapter,we study the accessibility of ci, on the basis ofAccessibility Theory putting forward by Ariel, we conclude that, when it is usedindependently, it is an intermediate accessibility markers. After that the TopicalityTheory help to confirm that our conclusion is right. In the forth chapter, we use the same method to test the accessibility ofdemonstrative expressions ci composing. When it is a Subjective, it is a highaccessibility markers, when it is on other syntactic position, it is an intermediateaccessibility markers.
