Relationship Between Perfectionism, Self-esteem, General Self-efficacy And Coping Styles Of Patients Suffered Internet Addiction Disorder

Objective: Internet addiction disorder (IAD) has been a new type psychiatricsymptom of non-substance addiction. In the clinic treatment of IAD, we found thatIAD patients may have a tendency to perfectionism personality characteristics. In orderto know more about the causes of IAD, the study investigated the relationship betweenIAD and perfectionism, compared the level of perfectionism between IAD and non-IAD,and to further explored the relationship between perfectionism, self-esteem.self-efficacyand coping style in IAD group.Methods: The IAD group were recruited from total courtyard of Beijing militaryregion, the non-IAD group were including students and staffs,who recruited from acommon middle school,a common university and some companies in Quanzhou. TheIAD group were diagnosed by using the diagnostic criteria for internet addiction disorder (Tao R),SCSQ,FMPS,SES.GSES;The normal group were diagnosed by usingquestionnaire of SCSQ,FMPS,SES.GSES.Results:(1) In this study, among the IAD patients,32.01%of them were having negativeperfectionism or negative perfectionism tendency. The scores of Perfectionism Scale inIAD showed significant higher than the the health controls’. The dimensionsof”Parent Criticism”,”Parental Expectation”,”Negative Perfectionism” and total scoreof Perfectionism Scale in IAD showed significant higher than the the health controls’(P<0.01).Patients of IAD are more negative perfectionism characteristic than normalpeople.(2)There are not significant difference between IAD group and normal controlgroup in self-esteem and general self-efficacy.(3)In the IAD group, the dimensions of“concern over mistake”,”parental expectations”,”personal standards”,”doubts aboutaction”,“negative perfectionism” and total scores of FMPS were negatively correlatedwith self-esteem,but the dimensions of “organization” was not correlated withself-esteem.Following the more increased level of negative perfectionism,the scores ofSelf-Esteem Scale were more significantly downward trend.(4)In the IAD group, thedimensions of “concern over mistake” and”doubts about action” were negativelycorrelated with general self-efficacy,but the dimensions of “organization”,”parentalexpectations”,”personal standards”,“negative perfectionism” and total scores of FMPSwere not correlated with general self-efficacy.(5)The result of stepwise analysisshowed that the dimensions of “concern over mistake”,”doubts about action”,“negative perfectionism” had significant negatively impact on IAD patients’self-esteem;And the dimensions of “personal standards” and self-esteem hadsignificant negatively impact on IAD patients’general self-efficacy.(6)In the IADgroup, the dimensions of “concern over mistake”,”parental expectations”,”personalstandards”,”doubts about action”,“negative perfectionism”, and total scores of FMPSwere significant negatively correlated with coping tendency and significant positivelycorrelated with self-esteem;the dimensions of “organization” and self-efficacy werenot correlated with coping styles.(7)Self-esteem plays a mediation role between perfectionism and self-efficacy in IAD patients.Self-esteem plays a mediation rolebetween perfectionism and coping styles in IAD patients.Conclusions: The study found that IAD patients have more relatively high level ofnegative perfectionism than normal person.IAD patients are more negativeperfectionism characteristics. Perfectionism of IAD patients was significant correlatedwith self-esteem,self-efficacy and coping styles. Self-esteem plays a mediation rolebetween perfectionism and self-efficacy,coping styles.
