On the basis of his prolonged artistic practice, Huang Binhong summed up a unique technique of brushwork and ink application. There was a very close relationship between the techniques of his calligraphy and ink application in his paintings, which was that his notion of "five kinds of brushwork skills and seven kinds of ink application techniques" reflected his style of both calligraphy and painting. His calligraphy works embodied profound aesthetical ideology, including vigorous and natural characters, emphasizing on the spirit, charm, and inner dynamics feeling, and attaching equal importance to inscription rubbings. At the beginning, this paper attempted to analyze the formation of Huang Binhong’s philosophy of calligraphy, through exploring his personal life experience, especially his experience of learning calligraphy, and his artistic achievement. And then from the perspective of his notion of "five kinds of brushwork skills and seven kinds of ink application techniques", we discussed his philosophy of calligraphy and application of brushwork and ink. Finally, from a practical perspective, we compared his composition of brushwork and ink and to his practice on calligraphy, to illustrate his artistic philosophy. Meanwhile, we discussed how his calligraphy asserted influence on his paintings-his paintings also reflected his brushwork of calligraphy, while his calligraphy enriched the artistic connotation of his paintings. To conclude, Huang Binhong formed his unique philosophy from his artistic practice and he absorbed the brushwork skills of calligraphy and applied them when his painted. His philosophy on both calligraphy and painting, as well as his artistic achievement in both calligraphy and seal engraving, had been a unique existence of its own and also had exerted a profound impact on future generations.
