Abstract/Summary:
News as a type of public discourse reflects social culture. A large number of news reports, especially economic news reports, which appear to be ostensibly objective and impartial, in fact potentially have ideological orientation hidden in them, reflecting the attitudes and value judgment of the reporters, and inevitably exerting a subtle influence on the readers. Therefore, it is necessary to study the discourse of the economic news reports to uncover their hidden ideology and power tendency from the perspective of critical discourse analysis.Based on the theoretical framework of Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model and the analytical tool of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar, this thesis carries out a research qualitatively and quantitatively on the news reports about anti-dumping and anti-subsidy issues in solar panels in three different procedures which are description, interpretation and explanation. At the description stage, transitivity and the lexical choice are elaborated in detail with the application of Halliday’s ideational function of language. At interpretation stage, intertextuality is discussed and the analysis is developed from the study of news sources and modes of news reporting. At the explanation stage, through the exploration of social, economic and political background, the analysis of text and discursive practice is conducted. Finally a conclusion is drawn from sample analysis that all the economic news reports are not necessarily as objective and impartial as they are claimed to be, and to some extent they tend to incorporate reporter’s or government’s negative attitude into the reporting. The purpose of this research is to enrich the study of critical discourse analysis from the perspective of the economic news reports. Its significance lies in two aspects:first, it affirms that ideology and power tendency does exist in the economic news reports which seem "neutral"; secondly, it contributes to enhancing readers’critical thinking and promoting their critical awareness in reading economic news reports.
