Meaning Transferring In Fu Huisheng’s English Translation Of I Ching Fromthe Perspective Of Semiotic Meanings

I Chingis the source and innerpower of culture andthoughts intheChinese nation. Its amazingmystery and wisdom lie in the concise but insightful language, and bright but profound culture. Onthe basis of semiotic meanings, this thesis analyzes Fu Huisheng’s English translation of I Ching, inorder to explore how and how well semiotic meanings have been reproduced in the translation. Thefocus of this thesis is to improve English translations of I Ching, and to achieve correspondence inmeaningandsimilarityinfunction.Within the established theoretical framework, this thesis explores the results of transferring thesource meanings from both micro and macro levels. On the micro level, the thesis analyzes howthree semiotic meanings are reproduced in lexicon, phrases and syntax; on the macro level, it mainlystudies the reproduction of cultural connotations and historical significancein linguistic meaningandpragmaticmeaning.According to the definitions of semiotic meanings and the characteristics of the original texts ofI Ching, the main part of the thesis studies the transferring effects of the referential meaning,linguistic meaning and pragmatic meaning in the translations at different levels respectively, as wellas the methods and strategies of achieving the meaning transferring. The thesis draws summaries oftransferring effects of each semiotic meaning, explain the effects and then make recommendationsaccordingly. In terms of meaning transferring, Fu Huisheng has translated I Ching fairly well.However,whentranslatingtexts withstronghistorical andcultural flavor, FuHuishenghas neglectedsomelinguisticandpragmaticmeanings,soastomaintainbasicreferentialmeaning.As a newly-produced translation of I Ching, Fu Huisheng’s version has been selected into theChinese-English Libraryof Chinese Classics. With manynew understandings and interpretations, hehas transferred the source meanings to the largest extent, making enormous contributions tospreading Chinese culture to the world and promoting Sino-western exchanges. However, thistranslation is still less thansatisfactory. In the general international atmosphereofmutual conflict andintegration, translators of I Ching also need to keep pace with the times. It is a great test of wisdomand courageforscholarsthroughtheagestocarryforwardancientChineseculture.
