| William Faulkner is an important writer in the literary history of the world and is famous for his "Yoknapatawpha" fictions. Light in August is one of his representative works, and the thesis tries to analyze its achievements in innovative narrative from the perspective of spatial narrative.Various critical approaches have been applied to analyze his works, among which are Psychological Analysis, Structuralism, Feminist Criticism, Myth-archetype Criticism, Narrative Approach and Psychoanalysis, etc. In recent years,"spaces" in this writer’s novels have drawn critical attention under the influence of "spatial turn" in the areas of humanities and social sciences. Although some scholars have focused on space elements in his works, few of them systematically carry out their analyses from the perspective of spatial narrative but only make them under Joseph Frank’ s space theory.Light in August is set in American south in the19th century and its narrative style is special in the shaping of the characters. This thesis describes three spaces in this work, analyzes its spatial narrative transformations on narrative spaces and narrative factors and delves into the main characters’salvation and depravity in terms of spirit and body, even the life outlook. The transformation of three story stands and spaces is fast, frequent and natural, which indicates characteristics of postmodern novel. In Light in August, the author presupposes and reconstructs the space form with his extraordinary imagination, describes and cognizes the life and mankind. Through plots’ space handling, he integrates much of his personal experiences and aesthetic ideas into the space of the novel, guiding readers to have a comprehensive interpretation of the novel. His understanding, imagination and application of the space tell readers that to construct a novel in space form can not only create numerous characters and demonstrate complicated themes, but also approach the nature, indicate the true meaning of life and enhance performance of novel. It is the certain rule to the development of literature itself that space form brings open structure, which has not only improved the performance of the work itself and increased great capacity and aesthetic value of work, but also realized the real unification of content and form. |
