Pipa overtone, is just like a shining pearl in the sea of art. Mr. Liu Dehai used itand developed a style-distinctive and skill-varied overtone-playing method, starting topay more attention to the importance of overtone in music, as well as the unique statuson the pipa music language.This paper is composed of three chapters: concepts and distribution of theovertone, crosstalk between “skills” and “feelings”, and overtone of the pipa languagein Liu Dehai’s works. From the principal concept of pipa overtone to four categories,eight methods, as well as twelve kinds of emotion, finally, I took Mr. Liu Dehai’sworks “Bai Ma Tuo Jing”,“Qin Warriors” as examples to elucidate the unique statusof overtone in pipa music language.From the investigation upon overtone, I have learned the unique aestheticperspective of Mr. Liu. The successful use of overtone in pipa playing is also hisskills of pursuing on aesthetic intelligence. Liu fused the overtone, which only playedadecorative role originally, into the pipa music language. To improve the languagefunction of overtone, is one of the innovative features of Mr. Liu Dehai in pipa.
