| Taboo word is an important linguistic phenomenon in human history, and is closelybound up with our daily life. With the development of the human society, taboo words playa more and more important role in cross-cultural communication of different nations andculture. Language is a mirror of culture. As a result, in order to make a betterunderstanding of the cultural differences between Chinese and English and achievingsmooth intercultural communication, the study of taboo words in Chinese and English is ofgreat significance.Based on a great deal of materials found, this paper aims to show the differencesbetween Chinese and English cultures through the study of taboo words. It is designed tostudy the definition, the characteristics, the origin and the development of taboo words, andfocuses on introducing the similarities and disparities between taboo words in daily life.According to the study of those aspects, the paper will then analyzes the culturaldifferences reflected from Chinese and English taboo words, and finally sum up someadvice on foreign Chinese teaching. Through the comparison of Chinese and Englisheuphemism, we could understand it better and make a more reasonable use of it, in order topromote intercultural communication. |
