Puppets And Politics

Jan Svankmajer is a master of animation and visual art. Born in1934, Czech Republic, he has experienced the political alternations, which had a strong influence on his writing. Svankmajer considers his work related to politics, for whatever theme his work is, there’s always an idea of understanding about politics in his work. Due to the politic constraints, however, he has to express his views in a more ambiguous way, which directly led to a change of her writing style.As one of the top animation masters, Svankmajer has created many outstanding films, which won many awards at Cannes, Belin, Annecy and other important film festivals. His innovation on movie techniques and concepts has enlightened the animation makers of new generation. Despite his great achievement, he was not given enough attention in China. This article attempts to change this situation.This article consists of three chapters, which are Jan Svankmajer’s life, themes of his works, and his style of writing. The first chapter focuses on how politic has affected his life, and illustrates the general style of his work during respective political regimes. With the "puppets" analysis method, the second chapter makes a study about different themes of his work. The third chapter introduces the styles and creativity of his writing.The aim of this thesis is not only to introduce Svankmajer from the western world, but also to inspire us to think about the connection between us and the world based on a deep understanding of Svankmajer’s life, his work and his spiritual as a great director.
