The Translation Of Compound Texts Guided By The Functional Translation Theories

Collins Quite Brilliant: A Celebration of British English, as a language andculture book, was published on June7th,2012. Based on the classification of TextTypology brought forward by German scholar Katharina Reiss, this source textbelongs to a compound text, which has both informative function and operativefunction. It is mainly focused on introducing the colorful culture of Great Britain andthe development of English, meanwhile editors also attempt to attract readers toexperience or participate in this cultural trip to Britain. Therefore, different translationstrategies and techniques should be chosen according to different text type duringtranslation, and proper translation techniques should cooperate with each other, whiletranslating texts possessed two and more functions.This report is based on the author’s practice of translating the first four chaptersof Collins Quite Brilliant: A Celebration of British English. The author adoptsFunctional Translation Theories, the Skopos Theory in particular, to analyze thetranslation of Collins Quite Brilliant: A Celebration of British English and illustratesthe translation techniques used in the translation project through case study;meanwhile, the author summarizes the inspiration acquired during the translatingprocess and offers suggestions to those translators who may encounter the similarsource text in the future.
