| As a great writer of having strong sense of responsibility, in the representative work of Dombey and Son, Dickens truthfully depicts a vivid and specific panorama of living conditions about humans existing in the industrial civilization of unprecedented prosperity. By discussing the ecological issues in Dombey and Son, this thesis reveals Dickens’ deep concern toward unbalanced ecology and expresses his expectation for the harmonious ecological homeland. This thesis is mainly composed of five parts. The first part briefly introduces the author, the novel and the literary reviews about Dickens at home and abroad and makes a general summary about the theory of eco-criticism. The second part mainly analyzes the deteriorated natural environment caused by people’s crazy plunder and damage to nature. By designing an ending of silent death, Dickens’ strong belief of returning to nature is vividly exposed. The third part mainly exposes the complicated and various social conflicts influenced by the rapid development of the Industrial Revolution. In an area of sound and fury, all the social relationships as familial affection, love and friendship have been corrupted by money-worship. In a word, all the social relationships have fallen into a wasted land. By employing the theory of spiritual ecology, the fourth part further dissects the spiritual crisis of individuals caused by the Industrial Revolution after destroying social relationships. Finally, by creating a character of repentance, Dickens’ ardent expectation toward harmonious self can be strongly confirmed. The fifth part is a detailed conclusion of those deep ecological thoughts embodied in Dombey and Son. It not only can reveal Dickens’ deep concern about human beings but also convey readers some information that only through adjusting humans’ behaviors and forming good ecological habits can make all the species as man, nature and society coexist and ensure the building of a harmonious homeland. |
