Weather metaphors play a fundamental role in human life. Throughconstant interaction with the weather conditions, people have gainedabundant experience related to weather. Therefore, people utilize theirknowledge and experience of weather to structure and conceptualize theworld. Within the framework of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory putforward by Lakoff and Johnson, this thesis makes a systematic anddetailed analysis of the conceptual metaphors of wind and cloud, twocommon weather phenomena in English and Chinese from a cognitiveperspective. Through the comparative study of the two kinds of weathermetaphors in English and Chinese, this thesis attempts to find out howweather metaphors are conceptually structured and explore thecommonalities and discrepancies of weather metaphors in the twolanguages. By explaining the similarities of weather metaphors in Englishand Chinese from the perspective of embodied philosophy and thedifferences by virtue of cultural diversities and language features, thethesis reveals the universality and specialty of human cognition. It ishoped that the thesis will deepen people’s understanding of weathermetaphors, improve their ability of cross-cultural communication andshed some light on ESL teaching and learning.
