A Study Of Subtitle Translation In Grey’s Anatomy From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

With the influence of globalization and the development of the worldfilms, audiovisual works have enjoyed great popularity in our modernsociety and subtitle translation, as a new type of translation, is playing amore and more important role. In the1970s, Hans J. Vermeer proposedthe Skopostheorie and argued that translation is an action with a Skoposbased on the source text. During the translation, the Skopos is regarded asthe main factor taken into accout. Vermeer, who puts forwardSkopostheorie, also comes up with the three rules of the Skopos rule, thecoherence rule and the fidelity rule. The Skopostheorie has broken theboundary of traditional theories and provided a new approach for thesubtitle translation.Grey’s Anatomy is a very popular prime time American TV series. TheTV series premiered on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC)since March27,2005. The series has been broadcasted for ten seasons.Because of the novel story, exquisite production and the excellentperformance of the actors, the series received the Golden Globe Award in2007and many Emmy nominations later. The thesis conducts a briefsurvey on the strategies for the subtitle translation of Grey’s Anatomy.Throughout the qualitative analysis method, the author will analyzesome examples chosen from Grey’s Anatomy. By using Skopostheorie,this thesis makes a study of the subtitle translation of Grey’s Anatomy from three aspects; in other words, analysis will be conducted fromperspectives of the three rules of Skopostheorie: the skopos rule, thecoherence rule and the fidelity rule. A lot of examples are given withdetailed analysis in order to find out whether the translation accords withSkopostheorie or not.It is hoped that research questions mentioned in Chapter one can besolved after the analysis and it will be proved that this translated textaccords with Skopostheorie. In the end, it is also hoped that moreattention can be drawn to the study of Skopostheorie.
