A Report On The Translation Of Human Capitalism: How Economic Growth Has Made Us Smarter-and More Unequal

This report describes the translator’s strategies in translating Brink Lindsey’s HumanCapitalism: How Economic Growth Has Made Us Smarter—and More Unequal.As a provocative and widely discussed sociology treatise, Lindsey’s book offers aseemingly gloomy fact that more and more people, due to a lack of right humancapital, are gradually being marginalized in social arena. He argues that it iseconomic expansion that is creating an increasingly complex world in which only aminority with the right knowledge and skills—the right "human capital"—reap themajority of the economic rewards. He also suggests how the huge benefits of thisdevelopment can be spread beyond those who are already enjoying its rewards.Inspired by Lindsey’s novel opinions, the translator translated the first fourchapters of this144-page book and summarized the problems throughout thetranslating process. During the translation process the translator recognized thatNida’s functional equivalence can serve as translation guidance. By applying variousstrategies, the translator achieved four levels of equivalence in translating this book.In addition, the translator also discussed the significance of making footnotes.As a comprehensive account of the translation task, this report consists of taskdescription, process description, case study and conclusion.
