This is a practical translation report. The source text is taken from Labor Contract Law of the People’sRepublic of China. This legal document specifies the conclusion, performance, modification, discharge andtermination of a labor contract, as well as other related matters within the territory of the People’s Republic ofChina. With the deepening of reform and opening-up, China is exchanging with other countries more frequently insuch areas as politics, economy, culture and law. In dealing with various international affairs, the role of laws andregulations becomes very important. Therefore, an increasing number of legal texts are translated into otherlanguages. A well-translated text can not only convey the correct idea, but also help China gain a favorableposition in international activities. This translation report compares the author’s translated version with the officialone from the aspect of Nida’s theory of functional equivalence, and then summarizes some common strategies ofChinese-English legal translation from the lexical and syntactic level, such as the use of archaic words, formalwords and synonyms, as well as the change of voice and structure in a sentence. It is hoped to provide someenlightenment and guidance for future Chinese-English legal translation. Meanwhile, the author also concludessome limitations and difficulties in the process of translating this legal document, like limited professional legalknowledge, failure to use legal terms, and troubles in dealing with some long sentences.
