The Self-opening Trading Port And Urban Transformation Of Modern Jinan

Urban modernization plays an important role in promoting socialmodernization, as well as closely related to people’s lives. The trading port of Jinanself-opened in1904, and created a good opportunity for urban development. Theopening of the trading port greatly accelerated the modernization process of Jinancity.According to the press and relevant historical data, this thesis studies thehistorical background of the self-opening trading port of Jinan, discusses themunicipal construction process of the trading port district, and analyzes the changesin its economic and public space from the perspective of social and cultural historyresearch. The thesis consists of introduction, body and conclusion. It has fourchapters and more than40000words. The introduction focuses on the urban spacestudy on modern China at home and abroad, and then discusses the related researchon modern Jinan.The second chapter discusses the background and process of the self-openingtrading port of Jinan, and the trading port district’s planning and organizationalestablishment. The self-opening trading port of Jinan met the requirements of thetimes. The Chinese government made independent decisions on administrative,legislative and judicial rights. The trading port district located away from the center,adhered to the “protection of the old city and development of the new city”, plannedroad network, built a park, and established a Commercial Bureau.The third chapter studies the trading port district in municipal space on the basisof the previous section. The specialized municipal management of trading port districtlargely changed Jinan’s urban space, so modern Jinan has made great progress in road,transportation, water supply, fire protection, hygiene, etc.The fourth chapter discusses changes after the trading port opened from theaspects of industrial and commercial economy. Jinan’s industry and commerce havebegun to take shape before the trading port opened. After the trading port opened, a large capital inflow promoted the economic development and accelerated thefinancial modernization. The national capital development and imperialist powers’economic invasion, caused a wave of “the revitalization of industry, the promotion ofnational products”. Jinan held national goods exhibitions.The fifth chapter mainly studies the rapid development of cultural entertainmentand public space in the trading port district. New urban public space has been openedwith the improving of the trading port district’s material space, such as parks,Guangzhi Yuan（广智院）, stadia, tea garden, theatres and cinemas. This chaptermainly discusses the transformation of urban space from these aspects.Chapter six summarizes the main viewpoints of the whole thesis.
