Translation is not a mechanical transition between different languages. It isconstrained by linguistic and social factors. During translation, all the steps—selecting original papers, considering their meanings, deciding translating methodsand checking out translating qualities, should be done according to certainfundamental principles and standards. The article Tobacco Control and Beyond: TheBroader Implications of United States—Clove Cigarettes for Non-CommunicableDiseases from American Journal of Law&Medicine is one legal essay which refersto many international laws and regulations. In order to attract the public attention toset up global trade laws, to make sure the evaluating standards and to provide legalreference to deal with trade conflicts, the author discusses the effects of the Agreementon Technical Barriers to Trade and Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures in terms oftrade conflicts. The article presents two trade disputes. One happened between theU.S. and Indonesia because of the United States—Clove Cigarettes. According to the translating practice, the translator discussesthe Rewriting Theory of Andre Lefevere and sets relevant examples. Then, thetranslator displays the main linguistic features of legal English at vocabulary andsyntactic levels through exemplification approach and comparative analysis approach.At the vocabulary level, translators should pay much attention to the professionalterms, the formal language, the archaic words and the exotic words; at the syntacticlevel, translators had better to focus on the complex long sentences and the passivevoice. Recognizing the styles of original papers is crucial so as the reference totranslation methods. The proper combination of translating methods and rewritingmeans could evade the barriers of readers’ comprehension and make sure thecommunication of people in different languages.
