The Shawshank Redemption’s Subtitle Translation Based On The Skopostheories

With the development of society, the communication among different countriesbecomes wider and wider. The foreign films, especially Hollywood blockbuster andSouth Korean’s TV soaps take too much time in Chinese audiences’ daily life andpeople all enjoy them. Foreign film enrich their life, shape their eyes and arouse theawareness of cross-culture communication.Subtitle plays an important role in expressing the film’s plot, so it is significantto work out appropriate translation strategy to translate them.However, film subtitle translation,as a special translation text, is a new field,which is attached importance to the quality of the film subtitle translation, the qualityof a film and the selling amount of cinema tickets.It is not only the transition of two languages,but also the process of the culturecommunication and impacting. It is influenced by the translation theory and therestrictions of its features, having an explicit aim.So far, the translation level of film subtitle in China stay an low level. Thetranslation work of film subtitle is not significant.This paper tries to analysis this motivational film of The Shawshank Redemptionin order to provide some translation experience to the translators in the future andmake some contribution to the film subtitle translation in China.At first, the paper introduces the studying background, research questions, thelayout of the thesis and the significance. Then the author discusses the film subtitle,the skopos of The Shawshank Redemption and Skopostheorie detailedly. In that case,the author conducts some useful translation strategy based on numerous examples ofThe Shawshank Redemption in order to explain Skopos’ practicability. At last, theauthor finds out that skopostheorie as a theory can guide the film subtitle translation.
