Research On Jameson’s Postmodern Cultural Theory

The publication of 《Postmodernism, or The Cultural Logic of late Capitalism》marks Jameson’s post modernism theory reached its peak, this thesis takes thebook as a basic to analysis on Jameson’s post modernism theory, in order to graspsthe characteristics of the post modernism, explores the development of WesternMarx theory, understands the western culture, civilization and the overall situation ofmodern western society, and puts forward the beneficial guidance of socialist culturalconstruction of our country.The first chapter briefly comments on Jameson himself and the domesticand foreign research status of the theory, mainly through the papers andacademic works which have been published to see the development process ofhis thought, then introduced the representative views in domestic and foreignresearch and purpose of writing this thesis. The second chapter summarizedthe cultural characteristics of the postmodernism according to Jameson’stheory. Jameson puts forward that the postmodern culture has four obviouscharacteristics, namely the disappear of depth model, disappear of historyconsciousness, emotion and sense of distance passing away. The third chapterdid a research into the theory of Jameson’s cultural history of capitalism.This theory is mainly based on the theory of the three stages of capitalismdevelopment history of Mandel, Marx’s production theory and Saussure’sthoughts on semiotics, made the development of the cultural of capitalismbe divided into three periods which are realism, modernism and postmodernism,the different dominant culture of the three periods is interrelated anddifferent. The fourth chapter made an analysis of cultural and politicaltheory of Jameson. Jameson linked cultural, political and social developmenttogether, put forward the theory of the political unconscious, cognitivemapping theory and the culture of third world is the "National Fable", all of this had a great significance on understanding the political function ofcultural. The last chapter according to the analyses before, made an evaluateon Jameson’s post modernism cultural theory system, and put forward thatwe should interconnect the variety cultures in our country, supporting theuse of mutual connection, promote each other, forming a virtuous cycle ofthe culture, made the culture playing its positive role, promoting theconstruction of socialist culture in China moving in the right direction.
