In the long literary history of Mr. S hituo, there is no doubt that he made fruitfulachievements in1930s and1940s. It is said that his novels, for example,<The trivialaffairs>,<The Orchard city>,<The Desperate man>,<Ma Lan>,<To get married> etcetera, could be referred to as excellent works, even masterpieces of Chinese modernnovels, even though they are describing nothing more than the scope of modern Chineserural society or the urban society. However, the author’s train of thought and presentationare significantly different. Hence his works have unique means compared with the others.Whether form the evaluation of his role in literary history or form scholars’ studies, it isconsidered to have sufficient space to be studied and revaluated, especially form theaspects of his overall description, his thinking of the modern Chinese rural and urbansociety, and his diverse writing skills in description.This paper is composed by four parts. The first part mainly aims at presenting the historyand current situation of the studies and the major controversies towards his works,thereby searching for new space to do further studies and finding meanings of newacademic research. At the second part, this paper analyzed his unique writing skills in hisnovels at the description of the various modern Chinese rural society and the urbansociety, through analyzing his master works in1930s and1940s, such as <The trivialaffairs>,<The Orchard city> and <To get married>. The third part of this paper focusedon his distinctive figures under his works, such as the mindless zombies, the dudes, theawakening people who fight for their dreams and the pretentious hypocrites. The last partput more emphasis on his unique and flexible description skills.It could be not easy to make an accurate evaluation towards the author’s historicalstatus in literature of1930s and1940s. However, his compositions on diligently digging into human nature, pursuing to exquisite skills, great accomplishmentand originality, are no less than that of famous writer of fiction in modern China.
