| With the development of society and economy, the field of linguistics gets a rapiddevelopment. With the development of linguistics, the researches on discourse analysisalso get a great development. As an important device of discourse analysis, lexicalcohesion theory has been applied to analyzing many different kinds of discourse.However, this theory is mainly employed to analyze the relatively short discourse, andrarely is used to analyze the long discourse such as the whole English lines of one movie.This thesis chooses the whole English lines of Life of Pi as the study object. Themovie Life of Pi makes Ang Lee the best director of85thannual Academy Awards andthis is his second time to obtain this honor. Thus, this movie attracts the attention ofmany researchers. As for his movie Life of Pi, fewer researches are involved in linguisticsfield. This study is a try in this field. For one thing, this thesis aims to explore thedistribution of different lexical cohesion devices in English lines of Life of Pi; for anotherthing, this thesis aims to dig the function of lexical cohesion in this movie.This thesis adopts Halliday and Hasan’s lexical cohesion theory and Hoey’s lexicalrepetition theory to analyze the English lines of Life of Pi, which reveals the distributionfeatures and functions of lexical cohesion in English Lines of this movie. It also employsMartin’s appraisal system to further explore the function of lexical cohesion in EnglishLines of this movie. In order to facilitate the exploration of the distribution features ofdifferent lexical cohesion devices, the author divides the whole English movie lines intothree parts and each part is further divided. In order to clearly and vividly show thedistribution features of different lexical cohesion devices, tables are adopted. Finally,through the analysis of the lexical cohesion units in some examples, the functions oflexical cohesion in the English lines of Life of Pi are explored. Through the analysis of the English lines from the perspective of lexical cohesiontheory, the distribution features of different lexical cohesion devices are explored.Concretely speaking, according to the frequency of different lexical cohesion devices, itcan be ranked as follows: simple lexical repetition, complex lexical repetition, simpleparaphrase, complex paraphrase, superordinate and general nouns. Through the analysisof the lexical cohesion units, the role of lexical cohesion in the movie lines is revealed,which mainly comprises the functions of revealing the theme and achieving coherence.Through further analyzing the lexical cohesion units from the perspective of Martin’sappraisal theory, the function of expressing attitude of main characters in this movie isexplored.Through this study, the distribution features and functions of lexical cohesion inEnglish lines of Life of Pi are revealed, which is helpful for understanding the theme andimplicit information in the movie. At the same time, this research provides a newlinguistic perspective for future study on movie lines. |
