Deconstruction And Reconstruction-a Postcolonial Interpretation Of Image-building Of Chinese American Males In Frank Chin’s Donald Duk

Chinese American males are stereotyped as inferior Other and positive imagesof them can hardly be found in American popular culture. Donald Duk is Frank Chin’sfirst novel which shaped positive masculine images of Chinese American males. Thisresearch, taking postcolonial perspective, attempts to employ Fanon’s concept ofinferiority complex, Said’s Orientalism and Homi Bhabha’s concept of mimicry toexplore the causes for identity crisis of Chinese American males, together with theways Frank Chin uses to deconstruct the effeminate stereotypes and reconstruct thepositive masculine image for the ethnic group in Donald Duk. The research indicatesthat Frank Chin aims to defend civil rights for Chinese American males, and hisefforts are of great practical and political significance to Chinese American males tobuild up their confidence to assert their rights in America.
